By way of explanation. The term 'home business' consists of two words. 'Business' is the second one; it's there to qualify and support the word 'home' and all that goes with it - and not vice versa. Consequently, we also list below, items which are of interest and value to the home. Whether in its context as an office or as a part of your family and lifestyle but always directed at the improved prospects and enjoyment that running a business from home, in its entirety, can bring.

For a current, multi-part overview of starting and running a business from home, go here: http://www.homebusiness.org.uk/features.htm

How to avoid common scams. http://money.aol.co.uk/2015/04/28/how-to-avoid-common-scams/ If avoiding scams was as simple as this article suggests, it makes you wonder why plebs are increasingly prone to falling for them? Especially since the internet came along. Perhaps the best solution is simply to ignore everything you see online, especially if it's in the media or from an 'official' source?

28.04.2015: Telegraph Business '5000 small firms' letter a 'stunt'. http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2015/04/27/watch-andrew-neil-call-out-out-david-gauke-for-telegraph-stunt_n_7150674.html?icid=maing-grid7%7Cukt2%7Cdl11%7Csec1_lnk2%26pLid%3D346854 Stunt? Or just another Government online scam in a long line of online scams? Naturally, by extension, this latest wheeze would appear to support all those cynics who suggest that all of the Government's (and its cronies') small business claims are just a 'stunt'. Of course, this latest piece of exposure receives no further mention in the country's Government-aligned, criminal media.

Conservatives are on the side of small business. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/apr/27/conservatives-small-business-businesses More drivel.

Britain's future rests with our best and brightest small business. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/sme/britains-future-rests-with-our-best-and-brightest-small-businesses-10208497.html Only 4 million 'SMEs' are acknowledged in this article, so the country must already be in major decline. The problem the media has in writing about small business affairs is thus twofold. They don't have anyone who knows what they are writing about or can do so with any authority. And secondly, they print so much second-hand rubbish about the subject, often from dubious official sources, that like any serial liar, they just don't know any longer, what the truth really is.

HMRC reduces usage of debt collectors. http://www.uhy-uk.com/news-events/news/hmrc-use-of-external-debt-collectors-halved-in-a-year/ HMRC has reduced its use of external debt collectors, according to research carried out by Hacker Young. In 2014, HMRC halved its spend on private sector debt collectors to £6.8 million, down from £14.8 million in 2013. The use of external debt collection agencies was first introduced in 2009, when HMRC was facing pressure to maximise the amount of tax collected. Since the introduction of the use of debt collectors, HMRC has faced criticism for the heavy-handed pursuit of outstanding tax bills. (EnterpriseQuest)

Seven rules that can permanently fix your personal finances. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/11565981/Seven-rules-that-can-permanently-fix-your-personal-finances.html Unsurprisingly, none of these 'rules' includes setting up a home business or becoming an 'entrepreneur'. After that, it's all in the hands of a Government of terrorists, spivs, scammers, liars, cheats, thieves and incompetent public school fags. At best. That's some 'fix' for your personal finances.

25.04.2015: Up to 40% of homeowners facing mortgage trap. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-32452598 Doncha just love it when you live in a country with a thriving, zero-hours, below-minimum wage economy, with a limitless supply of refugees to work for nothing - and all endorsed by America's financial mafia, the IMF? Amazon to deliver packages to your car boot. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/amazon/11558457/Amazon-to-deliver-packages-to-your-car-boot.html This is a good move by Amazon - as increasing numbers of Brits will no longer able to afford homes and will be resigned to living in their log-book loan, second-hand (and extremely unreliable) BMWs, instead. The initiative is being partly sponsored by another 'unreliable' German carmaker - Audi.

(Although my very first car was an Audi forerunner: an Auto Union DKW, 3 cylinder, two stroke, actually, and which never went wrong at all. Even after I rebuilt it. A wonderful car with real character. They don't make them like that any more!)

Increase in penalties for inaccurate tax returns. http://www.bakertilly.co.uk/media/news/HMRC-gets-tougher-on-inaccurate-tax-returns.aspx The number of individuals fined for including deliberate inaccuracies in their tax return almost tripled in 2013/14 compared to 2012/13. Responding to a freedom of information request by Baker Tilly, HMRC has revealed that more than 14,400 penalties for 'deliberate inaccuracy' were issued in the 2013/14 tax year, compared to around 5,160 during the previous tax year. HMRC can charge individuals a penalty when a tax return or other document includes inaccurate information and results in tax being unpaid, understated or over-claimed. The four categories HMRC uses to categorise inaccuracies are: error, failure to take reasonable care, deliberate understatement and deliberate understatement with concealment. Over 80% of penalties are issued under the failure to take reasonable care category. (EnterpriseQuest)

Freelancer business confidence increases. https://www.ipse.co.uk/news/2015/welcome-return-business-confidence-among-freelancers-survey-shows Freelancers' business confidence increased in Q1 of 2015, according to survey results published by the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed (IPSE). The survey of almost 1,000 freelancers in the UK indicated that two in five secured an increase in work in Q1 of 2015, while one in five freelancers found their workload fell during the same period. Average daily rates increased by 1% in Q1 of 2015 compared with the previous quarter. More than half of freelancers surveyed said they expected their daily rates to remain at the same level, while a quarter said they expected rates to rise, and less than one in five expected rates to fall. The survey of 307 small online traders, which was carried out in January and February 2015, also revealed that more than a quarter of them thought the next government should prioritise policies to improve postal and delivery services in order to boost economic growth. The survey also revealed that a quarter of small online traders believed increasing competition would limit their growth over the next year, while 10% said staff and pension costs would limit their growth and 7% believed growth would be limited by staff shortages. Miliband shows contempt for self-employed with lack of election message. http://www.bmmagazine.co.uk/news/miliband-shows-contempt-for-self-employed-with-lack-of-election-message/ To put this storm in a teacup into context, IPSE (better know to many as the once PCG) has only been around since 1999 and claims just 21,000 members, so scarcely a large, 'senior' UK small business association such as the FSB or the Forum. Furthermore, its own website states that it is IPSE's 'ambition' to become the voice of Britain's alleged 4.6 million self-employed - so quite some way to go yet. Especially as the figures for self-employment being offered by the present Government and its cronies are viewed with considerable, widespread sceptisism.

If there is a silent message to be gleaned from Milliband's non-appearance in IPSE's magazine, it could just be that a new broom sweeps clean and if elected, Labour would install its own cronies rather than stick with those currently in evidence.

SMEs must improve web presence to grow business. http://www.bmmagazine.co.uk/news/smes-must-improve-web-presence-to-grow-business/ Over 25% of businesses do not have a website, this article claims. Just '25%'? I have seen suggestions which go as high as over 60%. Certainly the vast majority of tradesmen I have employed during recent years don't have a website; in fact, they don't even sport email addresses, as a rule.

So, given the country's present economic success - according to the Government, its cronies and the IMF - that would put a strong case for SMEs not wasting their time and money with a web presence at all, as the current formula is clearly doing so well. Especially as 80% of the online presence of small businesses is absolute crap with barely a grasp of basic manners and education, let alone alone internet law, business etiquette and good practice. In which case, substantially reducing the country's numbers of small businesses with a web presence, would be a much better idea.

The report, 'Commercial Councils: The rise of entrepreneurialism in local government', refers to legal services as a potential future 'boom area' of additional income for local authorities, along with facilities and waste management. According to the report, almost a quarter of councils are already receiving external income by providing commercial legal services, and a further 43% are considering doing so. The report also found that 57% of local authorities have entered into a joint venture with one or more private sector firms. (EnterpriseQuest)

Tories pledge inheritance tax cut for millions. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/general-election-2015/11530440/Tories-pledge-inheritance-tax-cut-for-millions.html The Conservative Party has been talking about upping its feudal inheritance tax allowance and rules (you pay tax of 40% on what has been taxed already) for as long as it's been promising to cut red tape. The problem for any aspiring and/or successful home business is that even the proposed individual allowance of £500,000 is less than the average London house price which, when added to the savings dis-incentives of the new pension regime, suggests that there is no point in trying to be an entrepreneur in Britain at all.

New exemptions for providers of consumer credit. https://www.fca.org.uk/firms/firm-types/consumer-credit/instalment-exemption New consumer credit exemptions have been introduced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Previously firms offering consumer credit were only exempt from the requirement to apply for FCA authorisation if they provided credit agreements that were repaid within a maximum of four instalments over the course of a year. This has now been increased to 12 instalments. Firms must still meet additional criteria to remain exempt from authorisation, such as only providing credit for a fixed amount and not adding any charges or interest. Firms which meet all of the criteria may still require authorisation from the FCA if they carry out other credit-related activities. The new exemptions were introduced on 18th March 2015 and only apply to credit agreements made on or after that date. (EnterpriseQuest)

Three new Acts become law.

The Consumer Rights Act 2015, the Deregulation Act 2015 and the Small Business, Enterprise and Employment Act 2015 all received Royal Assent on 26th March 2015. The three new pieces of legislation will introduce the following important regulatory changes:

The Consumer Rights Act will revoke the Sales of Goods Act 1979 and the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982, simplifying and clarifying the provisions of consumer protection. The new Act will provide a simple, modern framework of consumer rights, particularly in relation to the supply of digital content. The Act will come into force on the 1st October 2015. Guidance is expected to be available before the end of April 2015, giving traders six months to prepare for the necessary changes. For further information, go to http://www.gov.uk/government/policies/providing-better-information-and-protection-for-consumers/supporting-pages/consumer-bill-of-rights.

The Deregulation Act 2015 will reduce the burden of excessive red tape on a range of business types including driving instructors, taxis and private hire vehicles and establishments that sell alcohol. The Act also exempts self-employed workers in low-risk industries from workplace health and safety legislation. The Act will come into force later this year. For further details, go to http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/20/contents/enacted/data.htm.

The Small Business, Enterprise and Employment Act 2015 (the Small Business Act 2015) will improve access to business finance by increasing the availability of investment for small firms to help them grow. An independent Small Business Appeals Champion will be introduced for all non-economic regulators to ensure that small firms can easily challenge a regulatory requirement if they feel it is unfair and minimises their ability to grow. The public procurement process will also be changed to ensure that small firms have access to public sector contracts and procurement processes in general. The Act will come into force later this year. For further details, go to http://www.gov.uk/government/news/boost-for-firms-as-small-business-act-becomes-law.

I would have thought their regular threat to air traffic security and damage inflicted upon the national economy would have justified being arrested and locked up under anti-terror legislation long before now? 03.04.2015: The election: Just what can the parties do to win over SMEs? http://www.bmmagazine.co.uk/news/the-election-just-what-can-the-parties-do-to-win-over-smes/ Bearing in mind that 99% of the country's businesses are 'SMEs', then it should have dawned on party propagandascheisewriters by now that arranging fewer column-inches for the rantings of a handful of tax-dodging political donors might be a good place to start? Or have I missed any statements or letters published or aired by British American/Israeli propaganda which has offered any points of view from the vast majority of the country's non-'Friends of Israel' business community?

Of course, politicians know all this. Just as they know SMEs don't have a voice. SMEs have been groomed not to have a voice. And that is the way it is going to stay.

Hey next Prime Minister what about us SMEs? http://www.bmmagazine.co.uk/news/hey-next-prime-minister-what-about-us-smes/ SMEs don't give political parties big bungs, do they? It's far easier to earn grotesque, taxpayer-funded salaries by parroting press releases and propaganda, than doing any real reporting. And now that Twatter and Arsebook have come along, the detachment of journalism from reality is even more pronounced.

The measures, which will be introduced on 15th April 2015, will encourage more shoppers to visit their local high street. Other planning changes include allowing shops, bank premises and estate agents to change use to become cinemas and gyms and allowing shops, restaurants and bank premises to change use between each of these three categories without requiring planning permission. For example, shop premises could be changed to a restaurant without the need for permission. (EnterpriseQuest)
